Palette Swap! by operatingthetan Palette Swap! by operatingthetan
Yes this was a legitimate way to create characters back in the early 90s. So this isn't laziness on my part, it's a statement about the process of video game design in a bygone era. LOL :D My ladies Kitana and Jade in MK2 garb.

edit: :iconkoui: pointed out to me that they did this because of memory limitations on those dinosaur cartridges. Kind of like how in RPGs they had like 8 palette swaps of the same enemy--that red hellhound you encounter at level 80? Waaay harder than the identical blue hellhound you trounced at level 10 lol.

also due to the limited amount of information 90's games could hold this was a way to preserve memory for other things such as graphics

the fact that Jade was a secrete character you could fight was enough of a motivation, however I only remember running into Smoke

Yeah I never got to Jade because as I recall it was super hard to find her. Maybe since they used photos of actors for sprites instead of hand drawing them it required more memory. That's a valid point, but not something you think of when you're a kid and there's like 7 palette swapped ninjas lol.

yeah she was supposed to be the hardest next to Noob Salibot

true not even the fact that all the male ninjas [except Reptile and Subzero] were different versions of Scorpion made a difference...then again you can never have enough scorpion =]

Very classic. I always did prefer dark skinned Jade.

Do you plan on doing one for Noob Saibot?

Thanks. After doing the females I was gonna do all the male ninjas so yes, eventually :D.
